Tenmoku

The art of this pottery is an ancient and fascinating industry.

The work of creating a beautiful pottery piece is time-consuming and requires a high level of skill.

Applying this to an actual product, the process of making a Tenmoku teacup takes several steps.

Anyone can learn how to make those exquisite cups by following a few simple steps.

You’ll first need to create a wax model of your work.

This will allow you to check your progress before applying the finishing touches.

Traditional models used for this include straight-forward plates and cups.

The artist will then apply the modeling material to a base and decorate the piece with interesting designs— also known as motifs— using stamps or their fingers.

After decorating, the artist will then apply their special glaze coating, which gives their work its glossy finish and distinctive appearance.

Lastly, they will fire their work in an oven at high temperatures to produce their finished product.

What color is the tenmokus glaze?

Tenmoku glazes are created by combining two or more traditional color families.

Artists combine different shades of red, green, and blue to create a vibrant new color scheme.

To some extent, the choice of colors in a tenmokus glaze can be dictated by the context in which it will be used.

For example, an interior might feature lighter shades of the same ones used in the creation of the piece while outdoor decorations might have darker tones used in the creation of the piece.

The use of different shades within each family also helps create depth within the final product.

The choice of accent color also determines how transparent or opaque the final product will be; opaque pieces have accent colors that create depth within the piece while translucent pieces have less opaque accents that create depth within the piece through translucency.
